Kintyre

Billed as one of the most beautiful destinations in the whole of Scotland the Kintyre Peninsula really is a beautiful place to visit. Located in the Argyll region of Scotland, on the western coast it is only a three hour drive from the hive of activity that is the city of Glasgow, yet when you are here you feel like you are miles and miles away from anywhere so hectic. Although Kintyre is joined to the mainland is feels very much like an island. This is where you will find the Mull of Kintyre made famous of course by Sir Paul McCartney and Wings.

In total the Kintyre peninsula is around forty miles in length and makes the perfect destination for a day out with the family. As you travel around Kintyre you will discover beautiful hills sheltering tranquil lochs, deserted sandy beaches and lots of history to be discovered in the local archaeology. One of the things that the region is definitely famous for is the quality of the seafood that is served in the cafes and restaurants here. There are some surprises to be found here too, such as the palm trees that grow in Campletown a result of the Gulf Stream and the effect it has on reducing the amount of rainfall on this part of the coast. This is a region where the rare golden eagle still makes her nests and can occasionally be seen in the skies.

Things to See and Do

You don’t have to go far to appreciate the incredible scenery that the region has to offer, it has to be one of the most beautiful areas in the country. Travel just a few short miles out of Kintyre and hop aboard a ferry and you are headed for the Isle of Gigha, the most southerly of the Hebridean Islands and a place unlike any you will have experienced before. Should you be missing the hustle and bustle of the city, Glasgow is close enough to enjoy a day out before heading back to the tranquillity of the coast. This is a place where you can get back in touch with the great outdoors; traffic jams simply don’t exist here, the air is clean and the beaches are just perfect for walks to free your mind and chase all of those cobwebs and clutter that comes with modern life away.

Get Out And About

This is a wonderful place for those who love to walk, and there are a number of different walking routes available that allow you to take in the very best of the local landscape. The Kintyre Way is divided into sections suitable for all levels of ability. There are also a number of excellent golf courses here where you can play with the sea as your back drop. Why not take to the sea yourself and head out for a day’s sailing? Sailing along the coast offers you a fantastic way of viewing the peninsula, or head out onto the lochs if you don’t feel you have the sea legs for open water.
