Wales Welshpool

Welshpool

Located in the upper part of the Severn Valley, the town of Welshpool is situated close to the border between England and Wales in what has to be one of the most picturesque parts of the country. Welshpool is a traditional market town set in the midst of Montgomeryshire’s rolling hills and beautiful unspoiled countryside. This is a town that owes its existence to the land and the agricultural businesses that were established here; in fact Welshpool is still home to the biggest sheep market held anywhere in Europe. However there is much more here to enjoy than the wonderful scenery and expansive countryside; there are museums, galleries, outward bound activities, parks and of course plenty of castles to explore.

Exploring the Area

You will find that there is much to see within walking distance of the town centre, such as Powis Castle which is said to be the most well preserved castle and garden attractions in the whole of Wales. The local museum too is easily accessed and you will be able to find out all about the town and its place in the history of Wales. You will also be able to take a ride back into the past on a working steam train and enjoy some of the stunning countryside as you travel. There are plenty of activities to be enjoyed outside from horse riding to quad biking, and the local wildlife is waiting to be discovered too as you enjoy your time outdoors. You will find many buildings within the town that are of historical interest, many of which you will discover if you join the heritage trail which takes you on a tour of the town.

Places to Visit

Powis Castle is a must see attraction as it houses one of the best collections of historical furniture and paintings in Wales. You will also discover a wealth of treasures from India in the Clive Museum which is located within the castle. The garden terraces are famous around the world; designed in a mix of Italian and French styles they offer a beautiful place to relax as you take in the history of this once medieval fortress. Powysland Museum charts life in the region from prehistoric times through to the present day and shows just how much has changed in the region over the centuries. Pay a visit to the Welshpool and Llanfair Railway and take a trip on a working steam train. The journey begins in Welshpool and follows the line through the Banwy Valley to Llanfair Caereinion. There are a number of special events that take place on the line throughout the year and also the opportunity to take part in an experience as an engine driver. For something a little different there is the Andrew Logan Museum of Sculpture where you will enter into a fantasy world of creations from this internationally respected artist. There are also plenty of activities to enjoy in the surrounding area including quad trekking at Middletown and the Spaceguard Centre located in Powys.
