Filey
Filey is a small seaside town on the North Yorkshire coast. It is located halfway between Scarborough to the north and Bridlington to the south. Unlike Scarborough and Bridlington, Filey is fairly small and quiet. You won’t find miles of amusement arcades and tacky shops in Filey town centre, but if you want a quiet day on the beach, it is the perfect destination.
Filey was once a busy fishing village back in the day when the fishing industry was the main source of revenue for families living on the east coast, but the fishing industry waned and today tourism is the main employer. The town has been a popular tourist destination since the 18th century, when visitors arrived in search of a more peaceful holiday destination away from the mêlée of Scarborough, and for a long time the Butlins Holiday Camp attracted tens of thousands of holidaymakers every year. Modern Filey has its own railway station and is on the Yorkshire Coast Line, so it is possible to visit the town even if you don’t have a car.
Things to Do in Filey
Filey is a traditional Victorian seaside resort, like many others along this stretch of coastline, but unlike its close neighbours Scarborough and Bridlington, Filey is very laidback and peaceful. The main reason, however, why people (particularly families) come to Filey is the award winning beach. There are miles upon miles of soft, golden sand at Filey, so even in the height of summer, there is always plenty of room to kick a ball about or fly a kite on a windy day.
Bird watchers and wildlife enthusiasts often flock to Filey. In the spring, seals sometimes come on to the beach for a quick snooze, and in the summer, it is not uncommon to spot porpoises in the water. Kids love the beach at Filey. They can play in the sand, paddle in the water, and then enjoy an ice cream from one of the many local vendors. You can also take your dog on the beach at Filey, although in high season, only part of the beach is open to dogs. If you prefer not to get your feet all sandy, take a gentle stroll along the promenade and enjoy the fabulous views.
Great Places to Visit in Filey
Filey is full of Victorian architecture; the Royal Crescent, which opened in the 1850s, is a fine example of this. St Oswald’s Church at the north end of the town is a Grade I listed building and is believed to be one of the oldest buildings in the town. Filey Museum is an interesting place. It is full of local artefacts and curios, which have been donated by local residents. If you want to learn more about local history and traditions, this is the place to visit.
The Filey bird Garden and Animal Park has an interesting collection of exotic birds and small creatures and is great for families. It is located on the Scarborough road to the north of the town. Flamborough Cliffs Nature Reserve is only a short distance south of the town and is also well worth a visit.
