Huddersfield

Huddersfield in West Yorkshire is a vast, sprawling market town situated halfway between Leeds and Yorkshire. To get a good sense of how large Huddersfield is, head to the top of Castle Hill and you can enjoy a fabulous view of the town.

In many ways, Huddersfield is very much a traditional northern town. Born and bred in the Industrial Revolution, Huddersfield is full of wonderful examples of Victorian architecture, most notably the town’s railway station, which was once described by poet John Betjeman as “the most splendid station façade in England”.

The town was also the birthplace of two important political figures: Harold Wilson and Herbert Asquith. So aside from admiring the wonderful buildings and imagining what life was like in Huddersfield at the height of the Industrial Revolution, what else is there to see and do in this interesting northern town?

Enjoy Amazing 360 Degree Views

As previously mentioned, Castle Hill is the best place to go on a clear, sunny day. The views from Castle Hill are simply amazing and although the road up the hill is quite narrow, there is ample car parking and plenty of benches where you can take a seat and admire the vista before your eyes. Victoria Tower on Castle Hill is an interesting monument. There is a small admission charge, but the inside has been beautifully restored and the staff are friendly.

Fly Kites in Huddersfield

Kite Flying is a very popular sport in Huddersfield. The town is quite high up so it is always windy, and if you head up Castle Hill, there is plenty of room to fly larger kites. Local power lines have been moved underground to encourage kite fliers to have a go and powered hang-gliding also practiced locally.

Watch the Football and Rugby

Huddersfield is home to the Huddersfield Giants, a massively popular super league rugby team. If you time it right, you can catch the Giants playing a home game at the John Smith’s Stadium. Huddersfield’s other rugby team, Huddersfield RUFC play at Lockwood Park. Football fans are also well catered for, with Huddersfield Town AFC, known locally as “The Terriers”, a popular local team – you can also see them in action at the John Smith’s Stadium.

A Day at the Park

Greenhead Park is a local beauty spot. It is only a mile from Huddersfield town centre, but once inside the park, you will feel as if you are a million miles away. The park has lots to offer families, with a children’s play area at one end of the park and plenty of child-friendly activities scheduled throughout the week. There is also a lovely café in the park, so you can stop for a coffee and a cake.

Other fun attractions in Huddersfield include the Kirklees Light Railway, the Tolson Museum, Cromwell Bottom Nature Reserve, and the Lawrence Batley Theatre. If you want to learn more about the town’s industrial heritage, make sure you visit the Colne Valley Museum – there is a period living room, spinning rooms and a loom chamber. It is run entirely by volunteers, so be sure to show your appreciation!
