When it comes to seaside fishing villages, it really doesn’t get more quaint than the coastal hamlet of Staithes. Located on the Yorkshire coast, this hamlet was once the biggest fishing port in the entire North East. In fact, the moorland is home to one of the biggest expanses of heather that you’ll find in all of the United Kingdom.

Staithes Beach – a Must-Visit Stop

If you do venture to Staithes, one thing you won’t want to miss is a visit to Staithes Beach. This small sandy beach is the perfect way to get that true seaside village feel. You can look out to the sea, or turnaround and take in the village with the rising cliffs behind it. Not only that but you’ll be able to delight in the many fishing boats that dot the area.

Now here is a really unique and special feature about the beach; beachcombers have the perfect opportunity to walk the coastline and look for fossils. That’s right, this area is referred to as Dinosaur Coast and for good reason. With that said, there are some particular areas that are known to yield fossils quite readily, including Penny Nab, Brackenberry Wyke, and Jet Wyke. The rock formations are also quite interesting since you can see bands that date back through a variety of ages.

For those who enjoy wildlife, Staithes is well-known for its bird watching and whale watching.
